Weird News: Strange Chicken Massacre in Alaska

Tuesday, June 8, 2010

The bizarre, wanton cruelty of this mass chicken killing in a far flung outpost of North America is truly baffling. What's even less certain, and might never be known, is the motive and the actor behind it. Was it just a frost bitten psycho or something more mysterious? Perhaps a mythic force haunting the wintry boundaries of Canada and Alaska best represented by Algernon Blackwood's Wendigo? You decide.

There was a similar rabbit massacre in the Wasilla area when I was a kid.

I"m sketchgy on the details after twenty-odd years, but:

A couple raised prizewinning rabbits in a hutch outside their bedroom window. Something on the order of two dozen rabbits were slaughtered in the night and satanic symbols drawn in the blood. Rabbits squeal when attacked and there was a family dog, but no one heard anything.

Weeks later, the family bought more rabbits and nailed down the hutch lids at night. Shortly thereafter, same exact deal. Not a peep alerted the family to the slaughter. Police opined it was the wok of cultists. I think the couple got out of the business.

Eerie story, Laird. Sometimes reality is just as strange as horror fiction.
