Lovecraftian Stained Glass by Airn Lebus

Picture the stained glass creation above adorning a Temple of Dagon, or perhaps an antiquarian's library of weird texts. Could there be a better match made in R'lyeh? This tantalizing artwork comes from Airn Lebus of Spectral Creations. Lebus' site contains a good number of other dark aesthetic displays, more than a few of which are highly Lovecraftian. His ink drawing "The Well" (below) is just one example.

Yet, the artist's stained glass representations of Lovecraft and Dagon showcase a truly unique talent. Lovecraftian stained glass pieces are one form of Lovecraftiana still rare, as any online search will reveal. It's also one that might, in skilled hands, potentially explode in popularity and profitability across the community of weird admirers. Lebus is very likely a pioneer in this field, and in one important truth: glass work like this is an incredibly comfortable fit for Lovecraft's literary blasphemies.

The ancient art of stained glass has always possessed darker undertones. The great Medieval portals of towering Saints, gory battles, and holy suffering are known to almost everyone in the West. It isn't surprising, then, that the old venue of religious wonders thinly masking multiple horrors and anxieties appeal to Lovecraftian artists. Lovecraftian stained glass could easily become a mind-blowing collage of tentacles, forbidden lore, and twisted academics poking their noses where they were never meant to. A deeply symbolic Lovecraftian work could even echo the prolific cosmicism H.P. Lovecraft championed in his fiction. Rather than forcing us to witness the glories and punishments of the divine, it might make us drool with awe and terror at the vast indifference of the void. If this is a future ligament of Lovecraftian art, then Lebus has done us all a great favor, and the only demand that can be made is simple--MORE!
