Some Early Lovecraft Film Festival Impressions

Monday, October 8, 2007

The HP Lovecraft Film Festival for 2007 closed yesterday, and already it's generated a few reactions and stories of interest. In no particular order, here are a few blogs from attendees to check out and keep an eye on the next few days:

  • Nobu's Livejournal: A nice run down of some of the shorts and longer works shown there. It seems a nice variety of films were shown, a few of which veered away from the strictly Lovecraftian. According to this account, Neil Gaiman's "A Short Film About John Bolton" and the Ligotti-based movie "The Frolic" were played, among many others.
  • "Kristen Bell stars in Mnemovore Demo Reel:" Courtesy of Slashfilm.com, previews of Hans Rodionoff's "Mnemovore" comic based movie was shown. Actress Kristen Bell stars as an amnesiac snowboarder who must battle one of the eldritch beings from the Cthulhu mythos. Interestingly enough, Guillermo del Toro, who made news a few days ago by restating his intention to film an "At the Mountains of Madness" movie, has also signed onto this one as an executive producer. However, it may be awhile for this one, since it seems to be in early production stages, despite the ten minutes presented there.
  • Calls for Cthulhu Blog: The creator of Cutethulhuvian standby series "Calls for Cthulhu" appeared at the festival this year. Luckily, his humorous shorts were a hit, and film producer Edward Martin III sold out on DVDs of the show. Perhaps the audience's taste and the interest of film makers generated here will result in a larger production one day? Time will tell. In any event, keep an eye on this blog, as a fuller account of the Festival's happenings with possible pictures has been promised.
That's all for now. As always, I will continue to seek out quality posts about the event and relay them through here as they appear.
