Cthulhu Karts

I'm pretty sure this one never saw the light of day. If it did, Yog-Sothoth save us. Planned as a Mario Kart like video game for a 2003 release, Cthulhu Kartswas originally designed for the PC as a bizarre Lovecraftian racing game. It remains to this day as an entry on Schadenfreude Interactive's website, an eclectic software developer who recently worked on several Accordian Hero projects (a take off on the popular Guitar Heros). In fact, a good deal of the games listed appear to be clever jibes at classic titles, if Age of Ornithology and Grand Theft Ottoman are any indication.
However, it gets weirder yet. This blog posting, "Schadenfreudian Slips," allegedly recounts an attempt by the game developer to court David Hasselhoff for introductory voice overs in Cthulhu Karts. In brief, Hasselhoff never showed, the incident likely never happened at all, though it does make for witty reading. The same might be said of virtually all the projects from Schadenfreude Interactive. I'd be very surprised to see, let alone play, any of their game releases. Yet, I've been wrong before. Perhaps the tendrils of Cutethulhu type parody surrounding Lovecraft's work really have stretched far enough to prompt the development of a racing game with the Great Old Ones. It may not exist yet, but don't be surprised if a serious developer soon sets out to open the unholy garage, letting the elder horrors drive in to consume us all.
