"Lovecraft's Pillow" Release on the Horizon?
Saturday, December 1, 2007
Via the Lost Carcosa website and Unfilmable comes news of another screening of the movie, "Lovecraft's Pillow," implying it may be close to a release of some sort. The short film, produced in 2006, comes from director Mark Steensland. It takes its title and theme from a tidbit by renowned horror writer Stephen King, who wrote in his introduction to Michael Houellebecq's H.P. Lovecraft: Against the World, Against Life, "And suppose somebody curious about why such an item would be on display--a writer like you, maybe--went in and asked about it, and the guy who ran the pawnshop said it was H.P. Lovecraft's pillow, the one he slept on every night, the one he dreamed his fantastic dreams on, maybe even the one he died on." King, overly bothered by the idea and out of respect for Lovecraft's memory, never went through with writing a tale along these lines. However, he used this creative seed as a welcoming mat for others to do whatever they might with it.
Unfortunately, as Dread Central's examination of "Lovecraft's Pillow" notes, it is quite short, like so many amateur Lovecraftian films. On the other hand, this only increases the likelihood of its inclusion in a future collection of HPL films put out by Lurker Films or some similar producer. It also may serve as an evolutionary step toward a longer work by a future enterprising director, by bringing King's original idea to a larger audience. In any case, look for this promising film to continue screening at relevant conventions and film fests, followed by a DVD appearance one day soon.
