Lovecraft's Providence Part II
Monday, January 7, 2008
Ever wondered what the walking tours of H.P. Lovecraft's Providence are like? Check out the photo gallery provided by Lost Carcosa to find out. This one was actually part of the Pulp Uncovered event last March. The Lovecraft tour, guided by prolific weird scholar S.T. Joshi, hit a number of important sites in the Lovecraftian historical sphere. Brown University, Swan Point cemetery, Angell Street (a site of two Lovecraft residences), and the real life inspiration for the infamous Shunned House were visited, among others. No word yet whether or not there will be another walking tour on such an epic scale this year. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely, as last year was an exceptionally good one, commemorating 70 years since Lovecraft's death.
Poking around online also turned up this map, used for Lovecraftian site seeing in the bygone (and sorely missed) days of the NecronomiCons. The conventions, held mostly in the earlier years of this decade, were incredible gathering points for all things Lovecraftian. Nevertheless, this excellent map remains from the days of the Providence convention, courtesy of hplovecraft.com. It easily forms the nucleus for a self-guided tour of Lovecraftian sites in Providence.
The map, emphasizing the College Hill locale of HPL's city, and its corresponding site names are below (fuller descriptions of each place are available at the hplovecraft.com source linked above):
