Weird News: Azathoth Sighted?
Thursday, January 10, 2008
H.P. Lovecraft's shocking ability to visualize cosmic monstrosities with a clear tie to physical phenomena continues to surprise, especially when recalling the relative primitiveness of astronomical understanding in his day. Look no further than this discovery of a massive black hole 18 billion times larger than our own immense sun. Only one Lovecraftian entity comes to mind: Azathoth. The chaotic terror of this "daemon sultan" appears in many a Lovecraft piece, but is perhaps best encapsulated in the dreamy, weird short prose poem, "Azathoth." Though Lord Dunsany's great creator god was a probable heavy influence on Lovecraft's Azathoth, it's still quite awesome HPL was able to conceive of a cosmic chaos in an era before the first nuclear bomb. Though Azathoth maintains a malevolence, he is also an "idiot god," and thus the closet thing to the senseless consumption of the mysterious black holes rolling across the void.
