Lovecraft Commemorative Service

Monday, March 10, 2008

A commemorative service will be held for H.P. Lovecraft again this year on March 30, 2008. This closely follows other honorary events typically held in March, in memory of the weird author's death on March 15th, 1936. As with the last two remembrance events organized by Providence historians, Lovecraft fans, and literary figures, it will be at Brown University's Ladd Observatory. This is a fitting location for a tribute to HPL, as he was an avid student of astronomy, among other sciences, and held this observatory in high esteem. Additionally, this museum of studies from the void is a natural site to honor the philosophic cosmicism Lovecraft devoted his life to expressing in his letters and fiction. The Ladd Observatory is quaintly antiquarian by today's standards, another appropriate feature Lovecraft himself would appreciate.

The Quahog travel site for Rhode Island lists the latest details here (scroll down), as well as several fascinating (and slightly creepy) anecdotes about past Lovecraft commemorative services. Jozabad's blog features some excellent photos and descriptive highlights from last year's lively gathering as well.
