"The Music of Erich Zann" CGI Short

CGI type animation has opened the field for many amateurs. Not surprisingly, this is the case with H.P. Lovecraft adaptations as well. Youtube and other centers across the 'net are now stocked with a good number of Lovecraftian stories utilizing virtual characters in three dimensional environments. One of the latest uploaded to Youtube is a production of Lovecraft's infamously outre "The Music of Erich Zann."
Unlike a number of other jerky, blurred, and unfaithful attempts, this one is quite good. Style, content, and overall execution of the animated scenes are very true to the tale. The ambiguous horror at the end has long been one of the most difficult aspects of "The Music of Erich Zann" to portray. It is also the uncertain terror left to the imagination that is one of the original story's strongest powers. This CGI production does a decent job of showing it, without showing "too much" to ruin the mystery.
Certainly, Erich Zann's eerie notes and pseudo-melodies are also a point of difficulty. The amateur film doesn't hold up as well here, but then again, none in the handful of Erich Zann films really have. All in all, this piece can best be seen as a seductive demonstration of the power computer animation places in the hands of amateur creators. Being well read in the weird and capable in the technical realm can yield quality results!
