A Ligotti Inspired Harlequin Sculpture

Monday, June 30, 2008

This spectacular sculpture by K. Burruss was inspired by Thomas Ligotti's celebrated tale, "The Last Feast of Harlequin." The unforgettable jesters in Ligotti's work produce more than their share of chills necessary to inspire art. And it seems that inspiration has fermented into brilliance in "The Masquerade of the Conquering Worm." The Lovecraftian overtones Ligotti famously incorporated into this early story of his shine in the capable hands of the artist. The Lovecraftian tinge and slimy trail are fine additions, bringing out the material terror of Ligotti's weird "clowns."

Additionally, this piece is groundbreaking for its professionalism and Ligottian origins. Only a handful of other Ligotti inspired artworks are known to have been attempted. Most were illustrations undertaken by the estimable Harry O. Morris, and enjoyed much of their exposure over a decade ago. This statue will go a long way toward bolstering the artistic reputation of both the artist and Thomas Ligotti. It's set to appear this fall at Atlanta's Dragoncon.
