H.P. Lovecraft's "The Terrible Old Man" Short
Tuesday, July 8, 2008
This computer generated short encapsulates the horror of H.P. Lovecraft's tale, "The Terrible Old Man." It appears to be the artist's entry for this year's H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival in October. All in all, not bad. There's something about CGI Lovecraft adaptions that never seem quite right. On the other hand, this piece is well made. It's paced fairly in its use of text from the story and animated imagery. The scenic depictions of Kingsport's mysterious hermit and the bandits that come for him strongly convey the spirit of H.P. Lovecraft.
One other positive thing can be said about the increasingly advanced CGI works: they have indisputably opened the door for amateurs to churn out almost any production. A bit of artistic sense, technical knowhow, and literary understanding contributes to the adaption of stories that might otherwise not be done for years, if at all. Lovecraft, with his increasingly large following in speculative fiction, is a natural beneficiary. Maybe down the line, traditional weird authors like Algernon Blackwood and Arthur Machen, as well as vanguards of the New Weird like Thomas Ligotti, will see decent CGI films.
