"The Legend of Bortua" Short Film

Wednesday, October 15, 2008

Bartek Nowakowski's "The Legend of Boruta" is a short film that's gained some acclaim on Youtube the past few months. It's a computer animated feature combining themes that almost everybody acquainted with weird horror loves: vaguely Lovecraftian evils of great antiquity, and Nazi plunderers. The dark animated sequences, tense environment, and folk like mystery combine to form a nice cinematic atmosphere reflecting the bleak, but beautiful talents of another rising producer from Eastern Europe. Though the most enshadowed part of Europe continues to gain attention in broader cultural spheres--in horror art and otherwise--it's strange showpieces are no less mature than some of the most celebrated works of Hollywood or Western pens. "The Legend of Boruta" deserves to proudly take its place at home in a venue like the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival, or at many of the other dark themed film showings it has already visited. Fortunately, this piece has picked up some well deserved awards, which you can learn more about at the artist's website linked above.
