"Canon Alberic's Scrapbook" on Stage
Sunday, November 23, 2008
This is a clip posted on Youtube by Britain's Nunkie Theater Company, a group currently specializing in performances of weird ghost stories by M.R. James. "Canon Alberic's Scrapbook" is featured here, a tale well representative of the breed of horror pioneered by M.R. James, where ignorant antiquarians unleash terrors from beyond while questing after curious relics of old. The piece is performed by Robert Lloyd Parry: an award winning actor whose passion for James' work blazes very distinctively here. Verily, Parry's delivery and tone is impeccable. One almost feels the ghostly tales of M.R. James are more than mere fiction when listening.
British readers interested in M.R. James should explore the Nunkie Theater website linked above for a schedule of ongoing Jamesian performances by Parry this winter. Later, a DVD featuring two ghost stories performed by Parry will appear. Nunkie Theater's Youtube account is also worth viewing for two other clips from a show featuring "The Mezzotint."
