Durtro Re-Releases Ligotti Inspired Current 93 Pieces Online
Friday, November 7, 2008
Durtro, longtime publisher of musicians well outside the norm, have re-released two notable works by David Tibet's band, Current 93. "I Have a Special Plan for this World" is a performance piece directly inspired by Thomas Ligotti's weird poem by the same name. Stylistically, it is a bleak, insane audio production that mixes creepy narration with cheap effects, as though it's being played over an old tape recorder (a feature reminiscent of another Ligotti tale, "The Bungalow House"). This work, spearheaded by David Tibet, is a 22 minute long ride through madness and desolation. While most CD copies are long gone, Durtro has made a .MP3 available for £4.99. An extensive sample of the track can also be heard at the page linked above.
The other re-released Ligotti piece is the unique album, "In a Foreign Town, In a Foreign Land." Another prominent collaborative effort between the weird author and Current 93, this one was actually written as an accompaniment to Ligotti's cycle of short stories under this name. The four ambient tracks correspond to the four tales comprising "In a Foreign Town, In a Foreign Land." They include ominous music, ambiguous sounds, and quotes directly from Ligotti's fiction. They were produced to be listened to while one is reading Ligotti's work--quite an experience if you're fortunate enough to acquire both. The original Durtro edition of Ligotti's "In a Foreign Town, In a Foreign Land" was bundled with a CD containing these four songs. Now, in .MP3 form, you can get them together again if you've already got one of the newer editions of Thomas Ligotti's Teatro Grottesco containing the "In a Foreign Town, In a Foreign Land" stories. Manage this, and you'll enjoy an aesthetic surge of energy you won't soon forget.
