A Message from the Cult of Cthulhu
Tuesday, November 25, 2008
The head of the real life Cult of Cthulhu has released a new message via Youtube. Venger As'Nas Satanis broadcasts his message of unholy enlightenment from beneath the confines of a Cthulhuvian looking mask (apparently Yog Sothoth). The High Priest claims he has come to awaken mankind to the true nature of their many eyes peering into different facets of reality, and offers to lead any who will follow to an unknown type of "promised land." Ridiculous internet stunt or potential message from a contemporary Nyarlathotep? You decide. Either way, I think he deserves some credit for the cool looking headpiece.
Satanis' announcement that there will be a new Cthulhu Cult event in the spring of 2009 may be of interest to Lovecraft fans. His Cult of Cthulhu held a kick off event several years ago that attracted some attention and big name appearances. S.T. Joshi, among others, appeared there. However, at least within the online Lovecraftian community, the Cthulhu Cult convention sparked some controversy due to a heavy focus on seriously launching a Cult of Cthulhu through occult ritual. It's a good bet that the 2009 event will have the same focus, as Satanis himself suggests in his latest video message.
Incidentally, another recent video from the Cult of Cthulhu may be viewed here. This one depicts an example of one of their rituals, complete with costumes and a Cthulhu idol. The size and genuineness of the Cult of Cthulhu's present following remains unknown. I doubt it's been registered as a tax exempt religion in the United States either.
