Story Readings by Mark Samuels on Youtube

Wednesday, December 3, 2008

It's not terribly common today to find weird writers with strong public presences on the internet. Mark Samuels is a definite exception. The British author has several great videos available for viewing on Youtube. In them, Samuels provides readings from a few of his tales and highlights the work of weird predecessors like William Hope Hodgson. This is not just a good way to sample the prose of an up and coming force in the modern circle of weird writers, but it's smart marketing too. Horror, and weird horror in particular, is a literary niche whose authors must gain prolonged cult success before they can hope to reap any reasonable sort of fame and fortune. So, anything that maintains the visibility of a writer is probably just a little less important than publishing the stories themselves.

Mark Samuels, unlike others in the field the past few years, remains a very active writer, churning out new tales at a brisk rate. His most recent collection is Glyphotech and Other Macabre Processes. Chances are good that writers who appreciate classic weird masters as well as better known contemporaries will enjoy the work of Samuels. And thanks to the ever thrifty features of Youtube, they'll find they can readily examine bits of Samuels' work by hearing it from his own lips.
