Weird News: Alien Comet Enters Our Solar System
Saturday, December 13, 2008
This weird news contains nothing outside what has probably been the norm in the grand scheme of things for billions of years: matter hurled outside their systems of origin traveling to other star systems. Of course, our knowledge of this phenomena has just expanded in a big way, which adds an element of strangeness through enlightenment. It reminds me of something Thomas Ligotti once said in an interview, where he noted one definite consequence of aliens or ghosts existing: if it happened, it would just be more stuff. More stuff to know about, think about, wonder about, and maybe even worry about as the para- and the -al gets culled from the norm. Perhaps that will be the case from here on out as we see comets from other solar systems and other exotic objects whirl around locales close to home.
H.P. Lovecraft, the aspiring astronomer who never surrendered his interest in the heavens even after a career in it became closed to him, would have appreciated this news article. The strange comet will retain its unusual charm for at least a little while. Until it becomes regular, it's worth celebrating as an interstellar symbol of a cosmos so foreign to human minds that it will always maintain a hint of oddity.
