Man's place in the universe (and on our own planet) slips a bit more with realizations like these. The high probability of squid, octopi, and other tentacled beings as intelligent tool users was perhaps a long time in coming. One wonders whether it was weird literary atmosphere or fate that caused H.P. Lovecraft to appropriate squid-like features for Cthulhu and his cosmic spawn.
