More on Lovecraft Copyrights
Friday, October 19, 2007
Via "Papers Falling from an Attic Window" comes this interesting, though somewhat uncertain article put out not too long ago concerning recent battles over Lovecraft's copyrights: "The Black Seas of Copyrights : The Arkham House Copyright Hypothesis." Most odd, according to this piece, is the fact that the main claimant to Lovecraft's works for many years--Arkham House--once had an attorney who argued Lovecraft's tales are public domain in an attempt to prevent his old friend Donald Wandrei from collecting royalties. However, as blogger Dan Harms notes, it is not easy to confirm these details, since the article's author only makes passing references to a few letters and wikipedia entries. If nothing else, it is a very strange footnote in the post-humous battle over Lovecraft.
