Lovecraftian Art Books

A Lovecraft Retrospective: Artists Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft is a seminal work, packed with hundreds of pages of beautiful art inspired by Lovecraft's fiction. And it had damned well better be, for the wallet busting price of almost $400. This is the most expensive Lovecraftian art book ever released, and in all probability, a good candidate for the priciest new shard of Lovecraftiania to date. As the seller suggests, its limited print and collectible features make it a fine investment, even if most of us can still only drool at the extravagant gem in its current price range.

Also notable, Thomas Ligotti wrote the book's afterword, as though adding an irresistible layer of frosting to this cosmic confectionery. It doesn't end there, however. The book actually comes in two editions. The $400 cloth-bound type with 2000 copies, and an even more maddening 50 copy run of the same book bound in leather, signed by more than a few of the artists. Its price? Two grand. Only the most purist and wealthiest collectors will be able to even consider picking this one up. Moreover, both editions have been on the market now for a few months, raising the question of how sales are going. Although the price tag is hefty, the book's recent appearance on Amazon.com has resulted in deep discounts. Shop there for the best price on A Lovecraft Retrospective: Artists Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft.

Don't feel too disappointed if, like most, you can scarcely dream of buying this epic work anytime soon. It isn't the only recent art worked highlighting gorgeous scenes of Lovecraftian horror. The Art of H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos, edited by Pat Harrigan and Brian Wood, contains excellent art work by genre leaders, for the much lower price of $30. It is nearly 200 pages of full color art, primarily detailing scenes and monstrosities from Lovecraft's most famous mythos pieces. I've heard this one is selling fairly well, a trend that will likely accelerate as the Christmas gift rush begins. Look for it online at sellers like Warehouse 23, or your local specialty shop.
