Alejandro Colunga's Odd Statuary
Friday, February 8, 2008
These tributary statues to the Old Ones were reported about a year ago, but it's just too good not to repost, especially given the lack of attention thrown to the original post across the 'net. Standing astride the beautiful coastline of Mexico's Puerto Vallarta, these idols double as chairs for guests (and worshipers) to rest in the cold embrace of Cthulhu and other blasphemies. They were created by Guadalajara artist Alejandro Colunga, someone very likely in touch with the priests of Azathoth through dreams, whether he knows it or not.
A few google searches turned up only a little further information about the self-taught artist (at least in English), but revealed different images. It appears Colunga has a history producing eldritch figures out of bronze, and often places them in public environments. Above, we have one of his "Universal Magicans," a strange figure from a collection of creepy mysteriousos set into the ground of urban Guadalajara. This just shows a different type of eerie design in Colunga's arsenal, one that definitely maintains the same air of the weird embodied in the Puerto Vallarta pieces. So, whether in the form of explicitly Lovecraftian sea things or less certain forms, Colunga continues displaying his talents, and leaves the public (particularly foreigners exposed to the weird tradition) wondering if his unsettling sculptures are mere surreal representations, or madness incarnate raised in unspeakable rites.
