Weird News: NASA's Extremophile Search Begins
Sunday, February 10, 2008
A NASA-backed force of explorers just set off for chilly Antarctica, in search of extremophile lifeforms dwelling in chemically nightmarish lakes that dot the continent. Tekeli-li, anyone? Sure, the scientists expect only to be started by alien-like microbes capable of thriving in the most unearthly environments this world has to offer. Perhaps like the Miskatonic expedition which was only after geological data, however, more than NASA could ever bargain for is waiting in the icy depths.
For the weird day dreamer, it's really a shame evolution tends to confine extremophiles to single-celled existence (at least on Earth). If given the extra push to evolve, we'd likely see worthy competitor beings to the Spawn of Cthulhu emerge. Still, even the existence of microbes capable of soldiering through blistering heat, acid, and radiation is remarkable. And sparks the imagination to muse on what might be lurking in extreme settings elsewhere in the universe...
