"The Wendigo" Amateur Film
Tuesday, March 18, 2008
Ever wondered what becomes of the damned victims dragged off to nether regions by the wind-walking Wendigo of the great north? In this short film, we have an answer--or, at least, a suggestion of one. Derived from Algernon Blackwood's classic tale of the weird, "The Wendigo," this amateur production is short on special effects and plot, but heavy on atmosphere. This design is very appropriate for Blackwood, however, whom H.P. Lovecraft praised as the indomitable master of bizarre atmosphere.
As an aside, it's quite surprising other Blackwood tales have not yet been adapted to film. Blackwood's relative obscurity outside of Britain is a likely cause. That doesn't justify the shortage though, since many of the English writer's shorter pieces would hold marvellous potential in the hands of capable directors. Further adaptions of stories like "The Wendigo," "The Man Whom the Trees Loved," and even "The Willows" would all be welcome additions to weird cinematography. They would also be very possible with a marginal budget and a massive passion for translating Blackwood's unique supernatural oddities and obsessions with Nature into movies.
