"Cast a Deadly Spell" on Google Video
Thursday, April 10, 2008
Google Video is hosting the fantasy noir film with a Lovecraftian edge, "Cast a Deadly Spell." This 1991 feature follows a parallel universe where magic functions alongside early 20th century technology in everyday life. Phillip Lovecraft is a stereotypical private detective, who investigates the horrors spawned by criminal elements employing magic for their own nefarious ends. This fictional Lovecraft also refuses to use magic himself.
Throughout the movie, a large number of Cthulhu Mythos references are dropped, and some entities make more explicit appearances. The Necronomicon, Lovecraft, and the Old Ones are about where the makings of a mythos movie end, however. The story closely mirrors more of a surreal mystery than anything else. Also, be warned: it holds a distinctive neo-B-Grade flavor. "Cast a Deadly Spell" is best viewed as a lighthearted satellite to purer Lovecraftiana by the admirer, or as a somewhat campy film good for a few group laughs with friends on a lazy weekend night.
