H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival 2008 Website Launched

Wednesday, July 30, 2008

The H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival's website has enjoyed an overhaul in anticipation of its three day festivities in Portland, Oregon this October. The new look also includes some new content--including announcements for this year's guests, entertainment, and other Lovecraftian goodness. Interestingly enough, the fest now includes a "Cthulhu con" sub-title, which is probably long overdue given the highly multifaceted nature of the past few years. With the virtual disappearance of organized Lovecraftian gatherings in the early 2000s, the HPL Film Festival has become a rallying point for all things Lovecraftian, and is certainly the biggest public Lovecraft event of the year.

Guests this year include Brian Lumley, Jovanka Vuckovic (Chief Editor of "Rue Morgue" magazine), Mike Mignola, Robert Lloyd Perry, and Scott Allie. This mixture of talents drawn from Cthulhu Mythos literature, publishing, comics, and film should make for a diverse experience. The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets are also reported to be a featured band at this year's event. The punk band, well known for its Lovecraftian musical offerings, is the vanguard of the tiny field of H.P. Lovecraft inspired musicians. As the site is relatively new, there is no word yet on featured short films to be played. The rapidly approaching convention over the next few months means these sections won't remain bare for very long though.

Finally, the 2008 poster selected for this year's Film Festival is just smashing. A witty reflection of the season's Presidential election, it's (for non-American and politically apathetic readers) an obvious artistic parody of Barrack Obama's red, white, and blue campaign poster. Can Lovecraftians hurl our idol to an even higher crescendo through events like the Film Festival this year? Yes, we can!
