Creepy Images 2: Maws
Thursday, September 18, 2008
The horrific tug of deformed faces on the mind is a loathsome and occasionally nerve-shattering thing. One of the most prominent features for horror manifest lies in the mouth. Great gaping maws easily hint back to earlier frights in human history: dragons, gargoyles, and demons of all types. This is probably the best explanation for why grotesque aberrations of the human (and animal) mouth appear so frequently in horror art.
The sculpture above mixes the best and worst features of human and insect-like mouths. A yawn from this thing would be a truly nightmare-inducing experience.
This razor filled mouth comes from the skilled mind and aesthetic style of the skilled Japanese writer of horror mangas, Junji Ito. While the mouth remains the supreme terror, it works in concert with the bulging eyes and ragged looking face to pump terror to new heights. The mouth on this one appears to be derived from a shark or some less mentionable sea creature.
This painted "Devouring Horror" relies on a popular technique that blurs the clarity of the terror, giving it a nightmare-like quality. However, the mouth in this painting, complete with elongated spikes of flesh destroying teeth, remains fairly obvious. Rather than dragging down the work with too much artistic contrast, it focuses fright on the supreme hunger of the being depicted here--all too much like the operations of certain liminal nightmares.
Not your average LOL Cat. This deranged modification of the internet's famous "Happycat" keeps his characteristic grin, but twists it into a much more threatening reptilian smile. This T-Rex faced cat is perfect for giving unsuspecting fans of LOL Cats an added jolt, or just dressing up your usual cutesy animal pictures for Halloween.
