"A Lovecraft Dream" Animation
Tuesday, September 16, 2008
This black and white animation depicts the imaginative horror of H.P. Lovecraft's nightmares. Dreams were a well known source for many of HPL's stories, and this nice animated short enlivens multiple horrors from his fiction quite well. Several familiar beings appear in this video: Nyarlathotep, Night Gaunts, Dagon, and others. Its use of animated drawings and fragmentary transitions between nightmares effectively echoes an authentic dream atmosphere.
Leonardo Manna's artistry in this animation breathes a unique style into the piece too. It appears the film moves through a series of three dimensional sketches to depict Lovecraft the dreamer, crooked cities, and strange creatures. This method isn't used very often in other Lovecraftian animations, but works wonders here. As a skeletal form for depicting dreams and all around pleasant style, the drawings of Manna make this animation both possible and delightful to watch. His animated sketches say more in each scene than even dialog might add in this mostly silent piece.
A high resolution version of this animation is also available for download here.
