"Nyarlathotep" Comic Coming Soon from Boom!
Tuesday, September 23, 2008
Boom! Studios, the popular publisher of Lovecraftian comics like "Cthulhu Tales" and "Fall of Cthulhu" has another one shot delight on the way from the fiction of H.P. Lovecraft. Nyarlathotep will be a limited edition hardcover graphic novel that follows the events of Lovecraft's prose poem by the same name. It's illustrated by Chuck B.B. of "Black Metal" fame. Though the comic, like the original prose poem, won't be lengthy, it will closely follow the tale that inspired it.
The artist has also selected a unique style for this artistic envisioning of Nyarlathotep that seems symbolic and almost Retro. A sample image is posted above. This colorful, somewhat cartoonish method may prove more appropriate than it looks at first glance. H.P. Lovecraft's original Nyarlathotep is a story of dream-like crawling chaos and degeneration. The surreal feel of it lifted by Lovecraft from his personal nightmares is appropriate for an artistic depiction that draws more from a symbolic imagining of the story than a realist one.
Nyarlathotep just continues the cornering of the market undertaken by Boom! Studios in its production of quality Lovecraftian comics. No other single comic publisher today is seen producing so many Lovecraftian works at the rapid pace Boom! keeps. Look for this 32 page hardcover edition to appear sometime this fall, retailing for about $15.
ADDENDUM: Nyarlathotep is now available on Amazon.com for the lowest price.
