Freaky Fish
Friday, October 3, 2008
It's often been thought that the most horrible things in life are those too strange for fiction. The slimy, tentacled, thousand teeth demons of the water are a fine example of this. Who could feel comfortable laying in that dark space of fading thoughts just before sleep while meditating on the living nightmares thousands of feet under oceans across the world? No one. Not because man isn't prone to envisioning all sorts of unspeakable things, especially in a near somnambulist state, but because these sea creatures are real.
The "Freaky Fish" page catalogs some of the newest, most chilling selections from nature for 2008. More than half of the thirteen sea beasts listed would be right at home in the cities of H.P. Lovecraft's Deep Ones. Several look like living abominations, conjured up by Nature in homage to Cthulhu and chaos. This website is also featuring a contest. It gives you the option of comparing the incomparable by looking these creatures over and crowning one the freakiest. And unlike the November election, this contest provides some true incentive for voting. One participant will win a free copy of Claire Nouvian's sensational work of deep sea photography (or demonology?), The Deep: The Extraordinary Creatures of the Abyss. All you could ever want to know about the most alien environment on our planet is in there. Nouvian's high resolution images of our more hellish neighbors are an almost infinite supply of weird grist for the nightmare mill...on overtime production schedule.
