Trailer for "Die Farbe" (A "Color Out of Space" Film)

"Die Farbe" ("The Color") is a German film adaption of H.P. Lovecraft's "The Colour Out of Space" currently in production. So far, it looks like the producers are doing everything very right. "The Colour Out of Space" is one of those HPL stories that's always demanded to be made into a movie, but only with the right mood and elements. We've seen slews of botched attempts at transferring the weird ideas and fear of Lovecraft's fiction onto film, but so far, it appears "Die Farbe" will not be one of them.

Black and white filters, a genuine "backwoods" environment, and creepy allusions to the meteor and its unforgettable taint suggest great things from this adaption. German cinematic history, which has a long and rich history of delving into dark places, is also likely being drawn on to create chilling results. Best of all, "The Colour Out of Space" is one Lovecraft tale left mostly untouched by directors. So, not only might we get a new story to film, but one done right from the start, without a shadow of ill formed ancestors behind it.
