Lovecraftian Pumpkins

Monday, November 3, 2008

A little late, perhaps, but this entry still makes it before the pumpkins begin to rot. This smattering of Cthulhuvian pumpkins comes from across the internet. Perhaps they shined their lantern glory this year, or perhaps on previous All Hallow's Eves. Whatever the case, they are fine symbols of the season of horror seeping into the bones through the winds at this time of year.

This design takes a detailed, realistic style with the Jack O' Lantern to pay homage to H.P. Lovecraft's chief entity. Must have looked lovely sitting on someone's doorstep or porch. Somehow, it also gives the impression that Cthulhu really is "not dead, but dreaming."

Here's a unique interpretation of both Cthulhu and pumpkin carving! Rather than completely puncturing the skin of the gourd, we have an etching of the dead dreamer in the pumpkin's flesh. A would-be lantern great for daylight decoration.

This tentacled, flaming eye is a cultist's delight. It appears to be a mixture of carved and painted elements; and an effective one at that. An eldritch symbol that firmly contrasts the pumpkin above. This surely raises the bar for the night time glory of lanterns (or "lanthorns," as Lovecraft might say).
