Apparitions of Antarctica

The southernmost continent has haunted the minds of weird writers since the beginning. Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft symbolized the eerie atmosphere of Antarctica in two of the most famous stories in weird literature. Now, the popular "Dark Roasted Blend" blog has done a fine job of collecting images of the hellish, deserted, and mysterious Antarctic in this post. Scroll down to the bottom and you'll even find mention of Lovecraft's most famous tale of terror at the south pole under "The Real 'Mountains of Madness.'" Antarctica: an entire continent of rusting hulks, meteorite covered valleys, and abandoned 19th century encampments separated by titanic peaks and unimaginable fields of blinding snow. Any one of these images is plenty to stir the imagination, especially as many look out on their own snow covered cities and gardens at this time of year.
The "Dark Roasted Blend" pictures cataloged are useful for a variety of Lovecraftian purposes. RPG Gamers, as well as weird writers and artists, should find sufficient nightmare fuel in these pictorial records to last a lifetime...or at least a cold winter's night.
