Semi-Lovecraftian Amateur Film "Utopikron"
Monday, May 5, 2008
This amateur film recently uploaded to Youtube is the winner of this year's 48 Hour Film Project in Philadelphia for best musical score. Besides having some haunting 1980s-like melodies, it also carries a subtly Lovecraftian touch. "Utopikron" tells the story of a middle aged dishwasher who finds a mysterious device capable of teleporting him (mentally or otherwise) to a place of strange joy. The dreamy, druggy atmosphere puts me in mind of H.P. Lovecraft's short-short tale, "Ex Oblivione."
Certainly, the underlying elements of both Lovecraft's fantasy and this production are one and the same. The relentless desire to escape from the horrors of mundane life may yield the greatest damnation of all, as these imaginative mediums recount. I dare say the clownish appearance of the others and the balloons carry a minor taint of Thomas Ligotti as well.
