A Hanns Heinz Ewers Based Short Film
Tuesday, June 24, 2008
Hanns Heinz Ewers was a favorite weird author of H.P. Lovecraft and many less prominent fans in Germany and abroad. He wrote more than his share of weird fiction and horror, but hasn't yet acquired the acclaim he deserves. With Ewers languishing in relative obscurity, it was rather surprising to come upon this find via the Thomas Ligotti Online forums.
This short black and white film, produced by David Cairns, is based upon one of Ewers' most famous works: "The Spider." It takes its title of "Clarimonde" from the main object of attraction in the tale. The cinematic version takes some chilling liberties that enhance the horrors of Ewers original story. In fact, I dare say I won't be able to re-read the narrator's diary the same way without picturing the fatal allure of this Clarimonde and the leering faces of previous dead tenants. Being drawn into the web of a bizarre spider has never been bleaker. "Clarimonde" the short film is not just a welcome discovery, but a real gem.
