Boom! Studios Plans "Fall of Cthulhu: Apocalypse" Series
Friday, October 31, 2008
Capitalizing on their recent successes with H.P. Lovecraft comics, Boom! Studios plans to release a new Cthulhuvian series late this year. The details on the new project, via the "Splash Page" blog, indicate it is to be a comprehensive storyline drawing from other Lovecraftian plots in Boom! comics. The new epic will be carried under the title "Fall of Cthulhu: Apocalypse." This series will reportedly integrate the Lovecraft sub-plots from the previous "Fall of Cthulhu" series, and possibly others like "Cthulhu Tales" as well. The comics writer, Michael Alan Nelson, says this about the coming Mythos blowout:
“This is the final showdown between ALL of our characters, great, small, and unseen. If you’ve been itching for some full-on divine smackdowns coupled with violent descents into irreparable madness, then you won’t want to miss APOCALYPSE.”
While previous issues of "Fall of Cthulhu" drew diverse inspiration from original story arcs as well as Lovecraft classics like "At the Mountains of Madness," its successors will give us what we really want. That is, an all out slug fest between eldritch horrors with plenty of insanity at first sight spread around in the fallout. As expected, the artwork looks fine as well. See the "Splash Page" blog entry linked above for a five page preview. Watch for "Fall of Cthulhu: Apocalypse" to hurl its first issue from the void just before the year's end in December.
Meanwhile, other Boom! series based around Lovecraft's fiction are continuing as planned. The publisher's site shows a new issue of "Cthulhu Tales" just released, alongside a comprehensive volume of previous issues from that series collected into a nice graphic novel. Indeed, Boom! has much in store for the Lovecraft fan throughout the holidays.
